Thomas is a graduate of the University of Wyoming and of the University of Oklahoma’s Economic Development Institute. He is also a certified small business counselor through the Wyoming Small Business Development Center and has achieved the designation of Certified Economic Development Finance Professional (E.D.F.P), through the National Development Council, a national leader in leveraging public and private finance for economic development projects. Previously, as Vice-President of the Laramie Economic Development Corporation, he helped established a local revolving loan fund, which continues to finance company expansions today. He also helped the Wyoming Technical Institute expand its campus, an $18 million project for Laramie. Since joining the WBC in 2000, Johnson has established several “Business Challenge” programs across the state in which startup businesses can win cash grants and services. He also helped to implement a local currency program in Rawlins and worked extensively to establish the Wyoming Market Research Center, which provides sophisticated research and market data for entrepreneurs. In addition, he writes a twice-monthly column in the Rawlins Daily Times on economic and community development issues. Johnson has a long family history in Wyoming. One of his great -grandfathers came to Cheyenne from Sweden in 1900. The other great-grandfather moved to Burns, Wyoming to run the Burns Garage in the early 1940s. Johnson now lives in Laramie with his wife Elena, two young sons (Tristan and Treyjan), two dogs, two cats, and a fish named Fishy.
