Report offers snapshot of Wyoming economic development in 2017

A snapshot of the Wyoming Business Council’s 2017 achievements and the opportunities and challenges ahead is available in the agency’s 2017 Benchmarks and Annual Report released today.

The report shows the efforts of the Business Council and its Business Resource Network partners to recruit technology and manufacturing firms to the state, help existing Wyoming companies and startups expand, and meet other, measurable long-term targets for economic development, among other objectives.

The annual benchmarks report offers a primer on how the Business Council is organized and funded. It also covers the wide range of programs and services offered by the agency.

“Last year was a productive year for economic development in Wyoming,” said Shawn Reese, chief executive officer of the Business Council. “Many partners - public and private, state and local - shaped 2017 to have lasting impacts to our businesses, our communities and our economy.  Many of these activities and partnerships are highlighted in this report.”

The Business Council began the new year by announcing the relocation of the corporate headquarters and manufacturing facilities of Weatherby Inc., to Sheridan.

Weatherby, which will move into the Business Council-funded Sheridan High-Tech Business Park built in 2010, is expected to create 70 to 90 jobs in northeast Wyoming.

“This is the culmination of many months’ worth of hard work by many parties, but putting in place the economic development buildings blocks to make this project happen took years,” Reese said.

The Business Council’s two decades of economic development expertise positions it to be a leading agency in working with others like the Department of Workforce Services, the University of Wyoming and Wyoming community colleges to execute the 20-year strategy of the Economically Needed Diversity Options for Wyoming, an initiative created by Gov. Matt Mead and the Wyoming Legislature.
