Roping the Wind Conference set to kick off Sunday

CHEYENNE - The Wyoming Business Council, The U.S. Department of Energy and CANDO will sponsor Roping the Wind, a renewable energy conference Sept. 11-12 in Douglas at the Wyoming State Fairgrounds.

"This is a conference for anyone who has an interest in renewable energy on either the commercial or private level," said event Organizer Ed Werner. "We are focused on helping the rural landowner who is wondering if he has an area where he can put something up for wind or solar power, as well as the average homeowner trying to make his house more energy efficient."

In past years the Roping the Wind Conference has centered on experts discussing the technology associated with renewable energy. This year the conference will feature experts who have installed systems of their own.

Andy Rose, a field engineer with Manufacturing Works, is an excellent example of the change in philosophy. Andy has set up a 10-killowatt generator on his property, and while Rose still pays monthly service fees set by his electrical coop and any power he may have to use off the grid, he said his generator has been able to produce more energy than what his home uses.

He will be available at the conference to discuss the technology.

Creative Energies in Lander specializes in renewable energies for residential customers. That includes power hook-ups to homes or vacation cabins in areas where there is no access to utility power.

In most cases solar or wind power can be installed and Creative Energies Co-Owner Scott Kane will be on hand to demonstrate at a workshop on Monday.

"With the movement in energy prices in the last couple months, I would expect to see a definite interest in alternative energy sources," Kane said. "We are getting a lot of inquiries these days and it is driven by the realization that there are limitations in our conventional fuel systems."

The conference will kick off on Sunday with Exhibit set up in the morning and a Net Zero home mini-workshop at 3 p.m. The evening will conclude with Mark Vermeer offering the keynote speech during dinner.

Vermeer is responsible for development and management of turnkey Biodiesel projects for Renewable Energy Group (REG). This includes assistance with business plans, site selection, permitting, preliminary design, capital cost determination, scheduling, specifications, contract documents, final engineering, and construction management. REG also provides training, staffing assistance, startup, and assistance with procurement of raw inputs and marketing of finished fuel and co-products for Biodiesel business ventures.
