Whitney presents at Home Performance with ENERGY STAR national symposium
CHEYENNE – Wheatland native and University of Wyoming student Miles Whitney was a presenter at the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR (HPwES) National Symposium May 23 in Austin, Texas.
Whitney gave a computer-aided presentation to nearly 100 contractors and administrators from across the country, including HPwES administrators Chandler VonSchrader of the Environmental Protection Agency; National Research Energy Laboratory administrator Patricia Plympton; and Dale Hoffmeyer of the U.S. Department of Energy office. The presentation covered the successes, challenges and future of the WHPwES program. While in Austin, Whitney also attended training sessions in building science to improve his technical skills.
Miles was selected from a group of Project Management students who analyzed Wyoming Home Performance with ENERGY STAR (WHPwES) as part of a class project during the spring semester. Whitney became so intrigued with the program he joined the staff of the Wyoming Energy Council (WEC) as a part-time home energy auditor and weatherization technician after the class ended.
Kevin Lewis, executive director of WEC, worked closely with Whitney’s class to select contractor trainers, a training curriculum and a marketing strategy for WHPwES.
In April, the Wyoming Business Council and Wyoming Energy Council announced the completion of training by a group of Preferred Contractors who provide HPwES services in Laramie and Albany Counties. These contractors are trained to perform home energy audits to help homeowners improve the comfort and durability of their homes while reducing their energy bills by up to 30 percent. For a list of Preferred Contractors, homeowners may contact the Wyoming Energy Council at 1-800-742-0312 or in Laramie, 307-742-0313.
Tom Fuller, manager of the State Energy Program at the Wyoming Business Council, said the Wyoming Energy Savers Loan program from the Wyoming Community Development Authority is custom-tailored to help finance energy-efficient improvements for qualifying home owners.
