Animal Identification meetings offered around Wyoming
CHEYENNE - The Wyoming Business Council and University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service will offer three informational meetings about the benefits of animal identification around Wyoming in the coming weeks.
The meetings, titled, “Why Animal ID Now? ID For Management, Marketing, and Profitability”, will take place in McFadden on Feb. 27 at the Rock Creek Fire Station; Casper on Feb. 28 at the Natrona Co. Ag Resource and Learning Center; and Gillette on March 1 at the Campbell County Extension Office.
The meeting will cover topics such as Wyoming Premise ID program; ID for management, marketing and information feedback; beef quality assurance; biosecurity; and source, age, and natural verification. Local ranchers, a feedlot representative and a packer representative, all of whom are involved in the value-added markets and information feedback, will share time at the podium. Also as part of the meetings, companies will be in attendance which provide technology and products that make it easier for producers to capture and utilize the data.
“This will be five worthwhile hours for ranchers interested in finding out more about the use of animal identification in managing their herds and providing new marketing opportunities from the segments of the industry that are involved in them. Animal ID doesn’t have to be on an individual basis to get information. Producers can gain similar benefits from cow groups being identified”, says John Henn, livestock and meat marketing manager for the Wyoming Business Council.
Registration for the meetings will be at 9:45 am the day of the meeting with a 10:00 am starting time. The meetings should conclude by 3:00 pm. Lunch will be available for $7 per person. To obtain an agenda or more information on the meetings contact Henn at 307-777-2847 or Steve Paisley, University of Wyoming Extension Beef Specialist at 307-760-1561.
