Anemometer Loan program returns for its third year
CHEYENNE – The Anemometer Loan Program, sponsored by the Wyoming Business Council’s State Energy Program, is looking for landowners interested in measuring the wind on their land.
An anemometer measures wind speed and the Business Council’s towers also track wind direction, duration of the wind, temperature and barometric pressure. Their measurements give landowners data to determine whether or not their land is suitable for wind power development.
“The goal of this program is to inform and empower land owners in Wyoming,” said Wyoming Business Council State Energy Program Manager Dale Hoffman. “We do this by presenting them with a realistic estimate of the wind on their land.”
In this, the third year of the program, the Business Council’s has 11 anemometers available for Wyoming landowners, who are required to pay the installation fee of $4,500. KB Energy, of Arlington, installs the anemometers and performs any needed maintenance over the year the anemometer is up. It is the duty of the landowner to change out memory cards of the recording device on the anemometer and send it to Intermountain Labs in Sheridan, which produces monthly analysis as well as a quarterly report.
Hoffman said since the program is run with public money, the information is also available to the public as well as the landowner. He said wind developers commonly call the Business Council asking for data points when looking for places to develop wind energy.
