Hay Show held at Bales and Bovines Conference

CHEYENNE – Wyoming producers are encouraged to enter the hay show at the second annual Bales and Bovines Conference, Jan. 7 at the State Fairgrounds in Douglas.

The show is limited to one entry per farm and will feature three classes – alfalfa, grass hay and mixed hay. Contestants may enter one small, square bale; a flake from a 3-by-3 bale; or a sample of a bale brought to the contest in a plastic tote. The minimum sample size is 50 pounds. Core samples of the hay will be sent to Ward Labs of Kearney, Neb. on Jan. 7 and results will be announced at 4 p.m. on Jan. 8. There will be prizes for the top scoring bales in each class. Forage quality will make up 80 percent of the final grade with the other 20 percent made up of visual appraisal.

There is no cost to enter the hay show or the forage analysis. Hay must be entered by 1 p.m. on Jan. 7.

The general public is encouraged to participate in a hay evaluation contest during Bales and Bovines in which one bale will be selected from each class. The public will guess protein, total digestible nutrients and relative feed value of the sample for prizes.

Bales and Bovines is one of four conferences which make up the Winter Ag Expo. The Roping the Wind conference, which also starts Jan. 7, will focus on myths versus realities of energy opportunities for landowners in Wyoming. The Ag-based Innovative Marketing Expo features sessions and speakers who have found unique ways to market or diversify their agricultural trades on Jan. 8. The Farmers’ Market Conference will wind down the Winter Ag Expo on Jan. 9 at the Best Western Douglas Inn. For more information on any of these conferences see www.wyoagexpo.com.
