Anemometer Loan program returns for its fourth year
CHEYENNE – The Wyoming Business Council’s State Energy Program is seeking Wyoming landowners interested in participating in The Anemometer Loan Program.
An anemometer measures wind speed as well as wind direction and duration, temperature and barometric pressure. The reports, based on these measurements, provide landowners information to determine whether or not their land is suitable for wind power development.
“In several instances landowners who have participated in our program have signed agreements with wind power developers,” said Wyoming Business Council State Energy Program Manager Dale Hoffman. “Developers have seen the data produced by the anemometers and felt that the wind potential was such that they wanted to pursue the matter further.”
The Business Council has 11 anemometers available to Wyoming landowners to determine wind resources for commercial-sized wind development. Three anemometers towers are available for determining wind resources for small wind installations. In the case of the commercial wind anemometers, the landowner is responsible for cost of the anemometer installation. Small anemometer towers are installed at no cost to the landowner.
KB Energy, of Arlington, installs and removes the anemometers and performs any needed maintenance over the year. It is the duty of the landowner to change out memory cards on the anemometer’s recording device and send it in for analysis.

Hoffman said since the program is run with public money, the information is also available to the public as well as the landowner. He said wind developers often call the Business Council asking for data when looking for locations to develop wind energy.
