WAGON Program

WAGON (Wyoming AG Ownership Network) links veteran farmers and ranchers with young people wanting to get a start in production agriculture. Just as every farm and ranch is unique, so too is the course of action that each WAGON participant will follow.

The program utilizes several cooperating agricultural and lending agencies to provide beginning farmers and ranchers with financial assistance, mentorship and educational opportunities to become successful operators.

How the program works:

Established partner ranchers contact the program and provide the program with information describing their operation and what opportunities they see for the right beginner rancher. Interested beginning ranchers complete an application for participation. Beginning ranchers accepted into the program are provided with contact information and descriptions for potential partner ranchers. It is then the responsibility of the beginning ranchers to contact, visit and interview with perspective partner ranchers.

Attributes of Established Partner Ranchers:

  • Willingness to enter a business partnership with the right person.
  • Willingness to mentor a person wishing to start a ranching business.
  • Willingness to commit time and resources to the success of others.
  • Absentee or corporate ranch owners may also participate.

Attributes of Beginning Ranchers:

  • Strong desire to establish a ranching business.
  • Self-starter and follow through on commitments.
  • Willingness to commit to a training program.
  • Ability to work well with others and accept constructive input.
  • May have worked in agriculture for years but new to business ownership.
