Official Launch of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Geotourism Mapguide
On On March 27, 2009, Wyoming Travel and Tourism along with National Geographic unveiled the new Greater Yellowstone Geotourism Mapguide. The project has been a huge success with the greater Yellowstone residents, visitors and supporters nominating over 800 of their favorite places, activities, businesses and events. The final map will feature about 200 of those nominations. The guide will be distributed free of charge through Wyoming Travel and Tourism and local partners.
The Greater Yellowstone region straddles Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Centered around Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the region includes 20 million acres of rugged mountains, picturesque river valleys, high desert plains, and distinctive communities. The goal of the project is to map the distinctive natural, cultural, and historical features of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. These Geotourism MapGuides are different from standard tourist maps in their focus on fostering tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, and heritage, and the well-being of its residents. National Geographic calls this “geotourism.”
The MapGuides, created through a collaborative process, highlight the natural, historic, and cultural assets unique to a destination. In this partnership, our region benefits from National Geographic’s considerable map-making expertise. For more information, visit www.YellowstoneGeotourism.net.
