(Re)Discover Greater Yellowstone-and help us to put Wyoming on the map!
The National Geographic Society, Wyoming Travel & Tourism (WTT), and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition are looking for site nominations for an exciting new mapguide project that covers the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Community forum participants will discuss sites and events to include on a new National Geographic MapGuide that will celebrate and help sustain the world-class natural and cultural heritage of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The Greater Yellowstone region straddles Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Centered around Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the region includes 20 million acres of rugged mountains, picturesque river valleys, high desert plains, and distinctive communities. The goal of the project is to map the distinctive natural, cultural, and historical features of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
These MapGuides are different from standard tourist maps in their focus on fostering tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, and heritage, and the well-being of its residents. National Geographic calls this “geotourism.” The MapGuides, created through a collaborative process, highlight the natural, historic, and cultural assets unique to a destination. In this partnership, our region benefits from National Geographic’s considerable map-making expertise.
Make Your Nominations at www.YellowstoneGeotourism.net
So we invite you to recommend cultural, historical, or natural landmarks, attractions, activities, events, and local businesses that capture the region’s unique character and beauty.
Using your recommendations, National Geographic along with a carefully selected council of experts from Wyoming, Montana and Idaho will produce a Geotourism MapGuide to encourage travel that celebrates and sustains what is most distinctive about the Greater Yellowstone Region. The two-sided map will be available to residents and visitors, and will be augmented with a website packed with educational information.
Now through June 30, 2008, nominate your favorite sites and events online at www.YellowstoneGeotourism.net. Nominations may include flora and fauna, historic structures and archeological sites, scenic landscapes, wildlife viewing spots, recreational trails, unique businesses and places to stay, and all of the things that contribute to the region’s culture such as local music, crafts, arts, festivals, traditional celebrations, and local cuisine.
